About This Spot

Stepping into Mercer's of Marlborough feels like slipping into a quietly cherished corner of the town, where the pace softens and familiar warmth settles in. Tucked just off the main street in Hilliers Yard, this café invites you to linger — whether downstairs amid its welcoming bustle or upstairs where a sense of calm takes hold. It’s the kind of place where the presence of dogs feels perfectly natural, and the staff’s friendly attentiveness subtly reminds you that community matters here.

The atmosphere is unhurried yet lively enough to spark conversation or simply accompany a moment to yourself. Natural light filters through the windows, highlighting the lovingly made cakes and thoughtfully prepared breakfast offerings, many of which reflect a care for diverse tastes — from vegan options to comforting classics. There’s a distinct feeling that each cup of coffee or tea, from a gently spiced chai latte to a smooth soya latte, is crafted with intention, encouraging you to slow down with each sip.

Mercer’s isn’t a place for rushing in or out, but rather an invitation to discover the subtle rhythms of a neighborhood café run by people who clearly value the everyday human moments—sharing light bites, warming up with a soup or toasted sandwich, or indulging in a velvety mocha alongside an exceptionally moist coffee cake. Whether you’re settling in for a weekday treat or a casual weekend catch-up, the space naturally fosters a sense of belonging.

Longtime visitors and local regulars appreciate how the care in the kitchen translates into consistent quality—every dish feels made rather than assembled, every cake slice reflective of time and attention. And whether you’re grabbing something to take away or nestled upstairs among the gentle chatter, the thoughtful hospitality of Mercer's makes you feel as if you’ve found your personal spot in the heart of Marlborough.

A charming little café just off the main street, don’t forget there’s more seating upstairs. We’ve been before, and the staff are always pleasant plus they allow dogs, which is excellent. Lovely homemade cakes with plenty of choice, and the coffee is lovely too. We’ll be back. Thank you. Lyndon S.

This café has been around for years, and it’s one of those rare places that has never once disappointed. The food is consistently excellent you can genuinely taste the care and attention that goes into every dish. Nothing feels rushed or generic; it’s made with real love. The owners are warm, genuine people who clearly take pride in what they do, and the staff reflect that same welcoming attitude. There’s a proper human touch here that so many newer places are missing. Whether you’re popping in for a quick bite or settling in for a relaxed meal, it always feels comfortable and familiar in the best way. If you want great food, great people, and a place that truly values its customers, this café is an absolute gem.

Family owned cafe with excellent service. Very friendly and the food was fabulous. I really enjoyed my Buddha bowl and my husband had an omelette which he also loved. Would definitely return.

Incredible looking cakes and bakes, lots of it homemade. Some really vegan options, including an exceptional lemon cake. Lovely service and staff even though we did a to-go order, they provided cutlery and packed the cake really nicely. We can't wait to go back!

Check it out!! Stopped at this little coffee shop, very friendly staff… coffee wasn’t bad either only I offered mine to the homeless person after a couple of sips who was sat under the arch just before the high street! He said he really liked the coffee, so I guess it was really nice!! I had no complaints from the teaspoon amount I had. Place is fairly small with a few tables, but to be honest, it’s well stocked and fairly clean. Cappuccino was £3.10 for a small and I got extra chocolate sprinkles!! Worth a visit!
